What National Writing Project provides the nation each year:

3,300 new teacher-leaders who attend intensive four-week summer institutes each year in local communities across the country.
In a single year, these teachers reach 65,000 students with high-quality writing instruction influenced by the NWP.
More than 7,000 professional development activities, in 3,000 school districts, delivered by NWP teachers to an additional 130,000 educators who reach 1.4 million students every year.

FY2013 Budget Request and Final FY2012 Budget Appropriations

On February 13, President Barack Obama released his FY2013 budget request. The administration's budget includes an increase to 25% in the Title II set-aside funds for competitive grant programs.

On December 17, 2011, the U.S. Congress passed an omnibus bill with FY2012 appropriations for several government agencies, including the Department of Education.

In the Department of Education's FY2012 budget, the Title II funding set aside for “teacher or principal training or professional enhancement activities to national not-for-profit organizations” was increased to 1.5 % .

NWP was eligible to compete for these FY2011 funds through the “Supporting Effective Educator Development Grants Program” (SEED).

Take Action: Tell Congress Your Story

The most effective way to communicate the importance of the NWP to your legislators is to tell your own story. How has the NWP and your local site helped you, your colleagues, and your students?

Write letters to your senators and representatives about the important work and positive impact of NWP. Learn more about contacting your legislators.
Ask others—friends, family, and colleagues—to send letters too.
Invite your legislators to visit your site to learn first-hand about such things as professional development programs for area teachers and youth programs.
Request support for the reauthorization of the NWP as a program within the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). NWP has been an authorized program since 1991. See EdWeek’s Politics K-12 for news on the FY2012 Budget and ESEA reauthorization.
